What do energy consultants do?

An energy consultant supports you in the planning and implementation of renovation measures or energy-efficient new buildings. They can use simulations to identify energy weaknesses in buildings and suggest measures to improve them. The term energy consultant is not protected, while the energy efficiency expert has special training and is listed with the German Energy Agency (dena). Energy efficiency experts are authorized by their listing to submit funding applications for refurbishment and construction measures to BAFA and KfW. They can also issue individual refurbishment roadmaps (iSFP) for a step-by-step refurbishment.

What does an energy consultation cost?

The cost of an energy consultation depends on the type and size of the property. Non-residential buildings are more complex than residential buildings due to the consideration of lighting and different zones, and larger buildings are more complex than smaller ones. The price of a comprehensive energy consultation ranges from €2,000 to €10,000. If only individual measures such as replacing windows or insulating the façade are to be carried out, the costs are lower.

When to hire an energy consultant?

If funding is to be applied for, it makes sense to consult an energy consultant or energy efficiency expert at an early planning stage. This ensures that the requirements for the components relevant for any funding are met and taken into account at all planning levels. In general, it always makes sense to involve an energy efficiency expert in the project, as BAFA and KfW support both holistic refurbishment measures and energy-efficient new buildings as well as individual measures such as replacing windows or retrofitting insulation to the basement ceiling. Even the costs for energy advice are subsidized by up to 80%. Commissioning an energy efficiency expert is therefore quickly cost-effective.

How do you become an energy consultant?

The term energy consultant is not protected, so anyone can offer energy advice (provided they have certain specialist knowledge). The situation is different if you want to apply to dena for a listing in the energy efficiency expert list: Here, further training from a qualified training provider is required. Prospective energy efficiency experts can specialize in residential buildings, non-residential buildings, monuments (and others) in various training courses. The scope of the training varies between 120 and 300 teaching units, depending on the specialization and the professional or educational qualifications to be demonstrated.

You can use dena's official list of energy efficiency experts to find listed experts in your area.
